5 Tips on How to Start a Boudoir Photography Career

If you find yourself inspired by the work done at Boudoir by Josh Hettinger, maybe you're considering starting your own career in Boudoir. If that's the case, we have five quick tips to help you get started.

1. Find your style.

There are many different types of Boudoir and glamour photography, so it's important to brand yourself and choose one style that resonates with you and, hopefully, your clients.

2. Get comfortable.

Doing a Boudoir shoot may be nerve-wracking for first time clients, but it's even worse with a nervous photographer. It's your job to make the client feel comfortable, so you better be comfortable, too. Be professional, but don't be afraid to joke around, compliment the client, and suggest different poses and looks.

3. Remember that one session usually involves two clients.

Most women who do Boudoir are giving their photos away as gifts, so remember that someone else is going to be viewing these, and that you need to consider their needs as well.

4. Create a seperate brand for Boudoir.

If you've started out as a family or event photographer, do NOT work under the same website or blog for your Boudoir photos. This will be very offputting to your more conservative family clients, so you don't want to lose old business over new business.

5. Protect client's privacy.

Be sure there is a very clearly worded form filled out if client's would like to release their images to be used on your website, blog or social media. Be considerate of the fact that some clients may have careers or relationships that don't permit this type of photography, and that you need to be careful not to jeopardize that.
